The academic literature on trade-offs in ecosystem management has paid relatively little attention to justice and poverty reduction objectives. aim of this paper is highlight the multiple dimensions services for alleviation, support decision-makers planning almost inevitable arising from environmental interventions. brings together different or lenses through which analyse alleviation a low-income country context. Following review trade-off decisions, introduces Balance Sheets Approach structure analysis appraise decisions. We apply five case studies set very social-ecological systems where were pertinent undermined alleviation. show how combination ‘positive’ approaches, often used at strategic level, with ‘value’ approaches values, multi-scale governance, power capacity, necessary complex trade-offs.
